Most of us must have heard of stroke before and probably know that a fatal stroke can lead to death but what really is a stroke? According to the Mayo Clinic, “A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications.”

From this, you can see that quick action is imperative to the health of a stroke victim. A quick field diagnosis and follow up action may not only save the persons life, but it might also drastically reduce the risk of the person suffering a damage to the brain. Thankfully, there are quick and easy ways of finding out if someone is having a stroke. However, there is a new sign that indicates the coming of a stroke, and it is the tongue. This message is very important and needs to be shared with as many people as possible so that more lives would be saved. Look at this story below.

One fine day, a woman by the name Jane attended a barbecue with her husband. During that barbecue, she stumbled and fell down. She was soon on her feet again and even reassured everyone present that she had just stumbled because of the new shoes she had on. She was soon given another plate of food and sent on her merry way. Jane had a lot of fun for the rest of the barbecue and soon left for home with her husband.

Sometime later in the evening, Jane’s husband called the family to share the sad news of Jane’s demise. She had died late that evening. What was very shocking to everyone though was that Jane had had a stroke that evening at the barbecue. It was really shocking because she had just stumbled and even afterward had had so much fun. But if there was someone there who had a comprehensive knowledge of the signs of a stroke, Jane would have been alive.

As a neurologist pointed out that the effects of a stroke could be fully reversed only if the victim of the stroke was attended to by doctors within three hours of the episode. All the family had to do was to get the person to a hospital within those 3 hours, and they would survive.

So, how do we go about the problem of being able to detect when someone is having a stroke. Well, there is always the STR steps to treat a stroke.

First, Read and learn. This simply means getting to know what strokes all about. Know in exact details the different symptoms of a stroke. Your knowledge of the symptoms of a stroke could be all that stands between a stroke victims life and death.

However, the basic indicators of a stroke lie in the easy to remember STR which when broken down translates to the following :

SMILE :Ask the suspected stroke victim to smile for you.

TALK: Ask them to say anything. A simple sentence would be enough.

RAISE BOTH HANDS: Something this easy is a pretty good indicator of a stroke. If they can’t raise their arms then they probably just had a stroke attack.

If the person can do one but not the others or can the others but not one of them, you need to call an ambulance for them because they just had a stroke attack.

However a new indicator of stroke has been found, and it is the tongue. So, how this works is quite easy. Ask the suspected stroke victim to stick out their tongue for you. If the tongue leans to one side or does not appear to be straight, that person probably just suffered a stroke attack and needs urgent help.
