Yeah, this might sound weird, but if chewing sounds get you upset, then you probably have a mental illness. It is known as Misophonia.
Misophonia is a mental disorder whereby people get annoyed and stressed when they hear certain sounds that they don’t like. Some of these sounds could include chewing, scraping of an object against another. It isn’t a well known psychiatric illness, but it is one that is very common amongst the population.
Now, although this mental illness can come across as being weird, strange or funny, it is a real struggle for a lot of people. Including myself honestly. Some people get severely distressed and depressed by such sounds. They begin to show all signs of someone going through emotional and psychological turmoil.
Since they don’t find it easy to communicate their challenges (because they are afraid of being misunderstood and ridiculed), you see that their social life and relationships begin to suffer.
Now you might have to ask yourself if these sounds bother you too. If they do, then maybe you need to pay attention to the advice below.
Do these sounds makes you angry?
It is important to know that people with the psychiatric disorder Misophonia, do so in silence because of social rejection. But it is essential to know that you have to communicate your problems with the ones you love and respect. That may not be the easiest thing to do but what things of value come easy? The rewards that come with such actions are always going to be worth it. If you are thinking about finding some pill to cure this problem, then I sadly have to tell you that it doesn’t exist. The best way to deal with this is to let your friends and family know about your struggles. That does help a lot. But be careful and try not to bite their head off, like I have in the past, due to the extremely annoying sound of chewing. That noise just crawls under my skin, even typing this and thinking about it is making me annoyed.
