21 Songs That Have Made A Difference To People With Anxiety And/Or Depression At Night

Music can be a powerful remedy. It can help us face our problems better and help us cope with our emotions. Likewise, music has been noted to cure many different situations – this has been known for as long as music has existed.

With that being said, music has a capability to heal thoughts that our mouth cannot say or explain. To help others with fighting depression and anxiety, we asked members of the mental health community to share what songs help them find inner peace.

Here are some of the songs that were mentioned:

Demons by Imagine Dragons

One reviewer said she finds the lyrics to Demons to be the most relatable to how she feels about her depression and anxiety. She wants to pass it along to her children.

“Your eyes, they shine so bring. I wanna save the light. I can’t escape this now. Unless you show me how…” – To her, these lyrics meant I want to help you and in return, you will be helping me, she explains.

Guns for Hands by Twenty One Pilots

Another reviewer said that this song is very personal and opens up about suicidal thoughts. She believes that the song is about accepting others and learning to become bigger than the depression, “turn your gun into a fist.”

Sleepwalking by Bring Me The Horizon

Gianluca said that when her anxiety is at the worst, she feels grey. She sees the world as a big grey mess. It makes her scared, and she wants to scream. When she listens to this song by Bring Me The Horizon, she feels whole and powerful again against all the violence and emotions of the worlds. (And she said other songs by Bring Me The Horizon work for her as well). She likes knowing she isn’t the only one suffering and she isn’t alone.

Peace Piece by Bill Evans

One person said that Peace Piece gives him strength and support. He feels it is a soundtrack of serenity.

Praying by Kesha

Rebecca explains that Praying by Kesha bring her peace of mind and makes her soul feel better regardless of when or how many times she hears it. She said the song makes her feel in control of her existence and that she has worth, which is hard to control when you are in a dark place. She said she cries and then she is safe all over again.

Skyscraper by Demi Lovato

Skyscraper makes one reviewer said that Skyscraper gives her hope and makes her feel powerful. She said it speaks to her and makes her feel comfortable.

Myriah (one reviewer) said that the combination of soft and loud was a perfect combination for how she was feeling and what it sounded like in her head. She gets candid when she speaks about the month before she was hospitalized for suicidal thoughts and this song would help her fall asleep at night.

Us Against The World by Coldplay

Millie stated that Us Against The World would take her mind away from her current situation and give her a break from her negative thoughts. She said that no matter what time it was, this song would make her feel like she is in another world.

Anemone by Joywave

Wendy said that this song helps cycle from suffocating or anxiety into a warm place. When she was going through rough times, this song would help her escape the dark places of her mind. She finds this tune calming, and it also has lyrics that resonate with her soul.

Grateful by Rita Ora

Taylor S (not Swift) said she is grateful for all the good and bad that comes. She believes that everything has formed her into the person she is today, with anxiety and depression.

Reflection by Tool

Jayson H says that Reflection has always been his go-to song for when he is feeling depressed. The lyrics helped him reflect on his depression episodes. The first part of the song talks about despair, but it becomes a brighter day. He hopes that he can have the strength and awaken like the song.

The Lonely by Christina Perry

One reviewer said that she often finds herself just laying in bed wondering if she should continue fighting this battle with depression and anxiety. When she listens to The Lonely on repeat, it helps her leave the dark state that she is in. She said this song speaks directly to her depression.

Morissa said she discovered this one when she was in a dark fight one night with her depression and anxiety. She realized that “one more day” was what she needed in order to keep moving forward in life with depression and anxiety. She just needed one more day to realize she wasn’t alone.

Lizzie said that depression and anxiety are extremely hard to deal with during the day, however, at night, they are even worse. She said her husband introduced her to the song and told her to listen to it when she was feeling down. She said it makes her feel like he is always there making her feel better.

Breakdown by Jack Johnson

This song is very upbeat and helps reduce unnecessary stress in life, even if it is only for a moment. Life can get crazy and out of control in the blink of an eye. The only thing you can sometimes do is breakdown. Dania said this song reminds her that when she is having a breakdown just to look around and see the beauty in the world.

Rebecca said this song embodies her loneliness and describes her anxiety and tortured thoughts to a T. She said that being overwhelmed by your own thoughts and demons is hard and you just beg for help and that someone will listen.

Try by Colbie Caillat

This song helps one reviewer by helping her realize that she doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Controlling the thoughts in your head telling you that you are fat or that no one likes you is a constant battle. When she listens to this song by Colbie Caillat, she feels in control of her depression and anxiety.

This song helps Shane E. understand that there will be rough days and it’s okay because the days will pass. There are times where it can be a real struggle, and this song helps lift the dark veil over his mind.

This Disney song makes Megan A remember there is so much more out there is life besides being depressed. This song helps remind her that she is in control of her life and mental health.

The Night We Met by Lord Huron

G.J C says this song helps her escape the chaos in her head. It reminds her of all the good times and the good feelings that came along with that. She feels like she is floating in space with this song and it helps her escape the chaotic mess around her.
